Gigi Grinstad, Moon Tower (Caput Mortuum)
24 X 12"
Oil and encaustic
Statement from the artist: "I was reading the book, The Secret Lives of Color, and discovered that the oil paint Caput Mortuum was originally made from grinding up old mummies into powder. Caput Mortuum means dead head. I thought that the color history gave an interesting extra layer to the moon tower as an object, especially when combined with the history of the moon towers as a deterrent to a serial killer and to crime in general. Also I had a tube of that color that I had never used. To my surprise, the deep brown diluted to a lavender color when mixed with white."
