Statement from the artist:
My partner and I have a practice of constructing altars for protection, for luck, to manifest a dream, to bless the space. When the coronavirus lockdowns began, I found some solace painting a still life of one of these altars, arranged on a sunny windowsill in our home. From the altar, a fantasy scene grew, in which a figure presides over the carefully crafted scene of magical objects, plants, and charms. In her hand, she holds a wand of bells, which she rings against the coming of a long night in a vast desert. Shaping her own world as she has, considering beauty and calling for inner strength, the character in this painting knows that she can face the many hours of darkness ahead. In fact, she can find beauty in the shadows. A new sight is possible by the light of the moon. She raises her head and looks out across the dry plain, all the space about her still and calm.
